Join us on May 19th from 7:30-9pm Eastern time for a workshop that introduces high school teachers to the Papers of Martin Van Buren.
Why should your students learn about Martin Van Buren? What relevance does this single-term president from nearly a century ago have to today’s world? You may be surprised. Van Buren played a critical role in creating the two-party system, created strategies for political campaigning still used today, and wrote prolifically on the key, nation-defining issues of slavery and territorial expansion.
This workshop shares strategies for teaching US History, Civics, and Government, and more. It introduces lesson plans created by 12 educators from around the country that focus on using Van Buren’s papers to develop key skills such as interpreting documents, employing historical empathy, and connecting the present to the past. We will be joined by three scholars of Van Buren’s life, work, and times, who have worked closely with teachers on these lesson plans.
Participants will receive a certificate noting their participation, ready-to-use lessons, and tips from fellow teachers and professional historians.
