Volume Measurement in the Financial Papers

While George Washington is known for his leadership as the General of the Continental Army and as the first President of the United States, he was first and foremost a farmer. The records of transactions in the financial papers serve as evidence of his success in agriculture. The pages use a variety of measurements to describe particular goods. Most of the time, the descriptions clarify how many goods were bought or sold, but the units of measurement are unfamiliar to contemporary usage. Read more
